Planning your hunting safari in South Africa should be part of the excitement. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about travel, health, what to bring, and how to prepare for a safe and successful adventure with Wellfound Safaris.

Travel & Transport

  • Flights: Daily flights are available from Johannesburg (OR Tambo International Airport) to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), the nearest airport to our lodges.

  • Transfers: We provide ground transport from Gqeberha to your hunting area.

  • Firearms: We strongly recommend using a licensed import agent to handle your firearm paperwork and customs clearance.

  • Insurance: Travel insurance covering delays, lost luggage and personal items is highly recommended.

  • Health Facilities: Both Gqeberha and Graaff-Reinet have modern hospitals and clinics.

Health & Safety

  • Malaria: The Eastern Cape is 100% malaria-free—no preventative medication is needed.

  • Indemnity: All guests must sign an indemnity form on arrival before hunting begins.

  • Hunting hours: Hunting is only permitted between sunrise and 18:00.

  • Firearm safety: Strictly enforced at all times (see “Rules” below).

What to Bring

We recommend packing for variable weather and rugged terrain:

  • Neutral-coloured hunting clothing (green, brown, khaki)

  • Broken camouflage (for bowhunters)

  • Warm, waterproof jackets for cool mornings and evenings

  • Comfortable hiking boots (light, worn-in, water-resistant)

  • Wool socks, gloves, and layers for winter

  • Quality binoculars, digital camera, compact rangefinder

  • Personal shooting sticks (optional)

Hunting Rules & Safety Guidelines

  • No hunting under the influence of alcohol

  • All firearms must be unloaded during transport and storage

  • No shooting at unauthorised species or birds (penalties apply)

  • Wounded animals are considered hunted and fully charged

  • Always obey instructions from your professional hunter

  • All guests must treat firearms as loaded at all times

  • Unsafe behaviour may result in termination of the hunt without refund

When is the best time to hunt?
March to September. Expect dry conditions, cool mornings (8–15°C), and warmer afternoons (up to 30°C). Snow is possible during high-altitude mountain hunts.

What currency should I bring?
South African Rand (ZAR). You can exchange at airports, towns or hotels. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted.
